For the back hair cadogan (also called catogan or catacoua) knot -- the low, looped knot at the ends:
1. 1786 Journal des Luxus; 2. 1785 Gallerie des Modes; 3. 1790 Marie-Antoinette à mi-corps / 1783 María Teresa de Vallabriga on Horseback; 4. 1787 Magasin des Modes (both), 5. 1784 Gallerie des Modes (DOUBLE cadogan!)

For the back hair - something easily missed (because back views are hard to find) is that the back hair was very different from the front curls, being long & straight (& styled a myriad of ways): 1. 1789 by Philippe Roland, 2. Mme Roland by Roland, 3. c. 1784 Ascent of the Monsieur Bouclé's Montgolfier Balloon in the Gardens of Aranjuez by Antonio Carnicero, 4. 1788 Promenade of the Ambassadors of Tipu Sultan in the Park of Saint-Cloud by Charles-Eloi Asselin, 5. 1783 L'assemblee au salon by Dequevauviller after Lavreince, 1784 Le lever des ouvrieres en modes by ditto, 1790-95 Interior of a Dressing Room with Jack Bannister by Rowlandson, 6. 1785 & 1784 Gallerie des Modes

Preview no. 4 of the 18th c. wig tutorial! You can curl a synthetic wig with hot water, & it's my preferred way of creating the curly front/top, straight back/bottom of 1780s hairstyles. This video demonstrates the technique from start to finish, plus shows you the curl set needed for the 1780s-90s hedgehog wig tutorial available on Patreon at 18thCenturyWig.
You can purchase the video for $5, or the full tutorial for $25. There's also a longer preview on Patreon.

Preview no. 3 of the 18th c. wig tutorial! We generally need more hair volume than comes in a standard commercial wig for 18th c. styles. This video shows you how to add additional "wefts" (pieces of weaving hair) to a commercial wig, making it full enough to create a beautiful 1780s-style hedgehog wig.

Preview the 18th c. wig tutorial! 18th c. wig styles need more hair than come in a modern commercial wig for making rolls and other elements and filling out the wig. When I wrote the "18th Century Hair & Wig Styling" book, I recommended buying weaving & braiding hair in a matching color. However, finding that matching color can be a challenge. So now when I style a wig, I buy TWO of the same wigs and take one apart for its (perfectly matching) hair. Video 2 will show you how to do that!

Preview the 18th c. wig tutorial! Never styled a wig before? This video will show you how to get started by "blocking" your wig - attaching it firmly to your styling head. For the hanging rolls & ringlets - interesting to note how they are more naturalistic in portraits vs. defined (& numerous) in fashion plates. My theory is that's due to the romanticism trend in painting: 1. 1781 Gallerie des Modes, 2. 1786 Gallerie des Modes, 3. 1787 Magasin des Modes, 4. 1783 Blanche de Narbonne-Pelet by Vigée Le Brun, 5. 1780s by J. Bralle, 6. 1786 Magasin des Modes, 7. 1787 Magasin des Modes, 8. 1783 Marie Antoinette by Vigée Le Brun, 9. 1783 Madame Charles Mitoire with Her Children by Adélaïde Labille-Guiard, 10. 1784 presumed Françoise de Taulong by Marie-Élisabeth Gabiou, 11. c. 1780 by Maximilien Villers
