Pet peeve alert! The late 18th c. “pouf” is the cap not the hairstyle. Read the full descriptions of the fashion plates and you’ll see they describe the pouf as being made of gauze and similar fabrics. I know we all want an easy shorthand to say “X hairstyle,” but the reality is it wasn’t that simple. ALL hair was big and high in the 1770s, unless you were living under a rock! Want to know@more?
